Structure #1
St Augustine Lightner Museum
1887
Completed in 1888, the magnificent Spanish Renaissance Revival building was designed by the prominent architecture firm of Carrère and Hastings.
Building Inspiration B - Memorial Presbyterian Church
Flagler Memorial Presbyterian Church
1890
Henry Flagler built the church for his daughter, Jennie Louise Flagler, who died in 1889. He chose Carrère and Hastings, the same architects who built the Ponce de Leon Hotel. Its design is based on the Basilica of St. Mark in Venice, Italy.
For my first structure I wanted to make something grand and sturdy looking. I wanted it to look historic and something that would fit right in with saint Augustine. I used the big pillars and the court yard like structure inspired by the Lightner Museum and took the circular accents from the Memorial Presbyterian Church and how it has that big circular stain glass window it has.
Structure #2
Building Inspiration A - Benedict The Moore Catholic Church
St. Benedict The Moore Catholic Church
1911
Named for the patron saint of African-Americans, St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church was built and dedicated in 1911. This church serves the historic Lincolnville district.
Building Inspiration B - Catholic Basilica Church
Catholic Basilica Church
1797
The Spanish, after Florida was returned to them in 1784, commissioned the structure to be built in the Spanish Mission style. The church was designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark in 1970.
For my second structure I wanted to give the look of a small and approachable look to it as the two inspiration buildings I choose gave off that same energy. For the building I wanted it to look homey and boxy, like the Benedict The Moore church. The pointed roof served to give it that kind of feel as the building was a standard boxy shape. The little tower that went along side the main building was inspired by the one tower looking part of the Basilica Church. I think it gave it that extra bit of build the structure needed and was a nice add on to the look of the main building.
